Habitat for Humanity

Sunday October 10 and November 7 (also dedication date)
AA is gearing up for our annual Habitat for Humanity build! This year we partner with Bnai Torah. The actual build starts early September. Our obligation is only for the two Sundays mentioned above. We need 30-40 volunteers for each day. The exact build site will be announced sometime in August. Qualifications: At least sixteen years of age, in reasonable health, and a willing spirit. No experience needed, as there are doable jobs for the young and old alike! Continental breakfast (bagels/coffee/juice, etc.) as well as lunch will be served to all participants. Water and snacks will be provided all day. If you are unable to join us at the build site, please consider donating to AA’s Social Action Fund. On-Going Projects: An Overview

SHELTER PROGRAMS | Ahavath Achim provides needed assistance for Zaban Temple Shelter and Shearith Israel Women’s Shelter on specific dates in late fall and through April. Volunteers are needed for spending the night at Shearith Israel Shelter and for providing/preparing food and serving on designated nights at both shelters. Contact Co-Chair Naomi Gold at 404.355.5956 or Alan Wexler at 404.872.8880, for this meaningful opportunity to help Atlanta’s needy. Zaban does not require kosher food, but hopes it will be kosher style; Shearith Israel requires strictly kosher food. Background: You will receive a thorough orientation from one of our Volunteer Coordinators when you arrive at the shelter. Overnight volunteers are an essential part of our Shelter program. We try to have two volunteers each night. They arrive about 6:15PM and assist our Resident Manager by serving the evening meal, handing out supplies, and just being a friend to our residents. Volunteers can turn in for the night once our guests are in bed. The Resident Manager stays on the premises the entire time, and in the morning the volunteers and Resident Manager set out breakfast and see the residents off for the day.

THE HUNGER WALK | Each March, the Hunger Walk provides another opportunity for our congregation to make an impact in our greater community. In 2009 we had 75+ member walkers and gave more than $20,000 to provide food for more than 30,000+ people in metro Atlanta. AA has been the 2nd leading faith-based/non-profit contributor in metro Atlanta, and, we have been #1.. and have consistently been #1 among all Jewish organizations overall. Organizers Sally Kaplan, Bebe Kaplan, et al, have consistently been our wonderful leaders … and they need our support and our feet! DONATIONS: Please mail your donations to Sally Kaplan (770.952.8752), AA Synagogue, or donate online (select Hunger Walk in the drop-down box). For information, contact Sally or Alan Wexler, AA Social Action Chairman, at 404.872.8880.

SHARE OUR SHABBAT | We want you to know what happens to all the food left over from our Shabbat Kiddush. A team of AA members led by Nancy Canter Weiner and Alan Wexler drop off the left over food each Sunday just following Religious School. It takes about a half an hour to drive to the Task Force for the Homeless and drop off the food. Want to get your family involved? Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. CITY-WIDE BLOOD DRIVE | For years this quarterly drive has helped restock the American Red Cross with pints of blood. This beautiful and wonderful work needs your support. More here.

SAVE DARFUR COALITION | Let your voice be heard... simply log on Save Darfur and tell your President, Congressmen, and Senators, to end the holocaust which continues to destroy life in that African country.

CAREGIVER: Medical Transport Program | How will you get to your doctor's appointment when you can't drive anymore?  How do you get to the grocery store when you are caring for someone at home who can't travel and can't be left alone?  Do you have a few hours each month to help these Jewish families?  Contact CaregiverCARE Atlanta at 770.677.9432 or call Alan Wexler at 404.872.8880.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY | Last year, Ahavath Achim was involved in two build dates: Sunday, October 18, and Sunday, October 25 (dedication day) and had the prime responsibility to provide manpower and food those days. Many thanks to Jeffrey Victor and Barry Silver, co-chairs, and Alan Wexler for yet another terrific success!

OPERATION ISAIAH | Chaired by Daniel and Nancy Weiner and Eve Goldstein, this annual food drive collected 7,500 pounds of non-perishable items that was donated to feed the homeless and hungry of Atlanta. What a HUGE outpouring of generosity from our AA family!
