In the latest issue of The Forward, Leonard Fein, a keen observer of the American Jewish scene who has always expressed a love for the State of Israel even when he has disagreed with the policies of its government, wrote about a recent debate between Rabbi Daniel Gordis and Peter Beinart. Rabbi Gordis, Senior Vice President and the Koret Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, is well-known for his passionate essays on the unique nature of Israel and what it means to the Jewish people. Peter Beinart, editor of the Daily Beast blog, Open Zion, and author of the book, The Crisis of Zionism, is known for his criticisms of significant policies of the present Israeli government and for sounding the alarm regarding the troubled relationship a number of younger Jews share with the State of Israel. Needless to say, Rabbi Gordis and Mr. Beinart share significant differences vis-a-vis Israel. |
